Lockesburg is a small city located in Sevier County, Arkansas, in the United States. It's a place with a rich history and a friendly community. In 2020, about 594 people lived there.

History of Lockesburg

Lockesburg became the main town, or "county seat," for Sevier County on January 18, 1869. This means it was where the local government offices were located. However, it wasn't officially recognized as a city until November 7, 1878.

How Lockesburg Started

The land for Lockesburg was given by three members of a well-known local family, James, William, and Matthew Locke, along with Royal Appleton. They wanted to create a new county seat. The old county seat, Paraclifta, was no longer in the center of the county after some land was used to create a new county called Little River County.

Challenges and Growth

The town's growth slowed down when a major railroad decided to build its tracks through De Queen instead of Lockesburg in 1897. This was a big deal because railroads helped towns grow by bringing in people and businesses. Because of this, Lockesburg lost its status as the county seat to De Queen in 1905.

However, Lockesburg found a new way to grow in the 20th century. The timber industry, which involves cutting down trees for wood, helped the town's economy get stronger.
