History of Lockland
The village of Lockland got its name because of its connection to the Miami and Erie Canal. This canal had the first set of lock gates north of Cincinnati. Locks are like water elevators that help boats move between different water levels.
The Miami and Erie Canal
The Miami and Erie Canal was a very important way to transport goods. It connected places as far away as New Orleans and New York City. Businesses were interested in the western Ohio area because they wanted to connect Lake Erie to the Ohio River.
Lockland was a great spot for industry because it had a 15-foot difference in water levels. This allowed for a water-powered gristmill, which used water to grind grain. There was also a large pond where boats could stop for repairs or to wait.
From Canals to Highways
Later in the 1800s, many railways were built. These new train lines made the canal less useful. The canal officially stopped working in 1929.
In the 1930s, parts of the old canal path were used to build new roads. These included the Mill Creek Expressway and the Wright-Lockland Highway. In 1956, the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act created the interstate system we know today. This included Interstate 75, which was built along the Mill Creek Expressway.
Stearns and Foster Mattress Company
Lockland was once home to the Stearns and Foster Mattress company. This company started in Cincinnati in 1846 and moved to Lockland in 1880. Their original factory and office buildings are still in the downtown area of the village.
Sadly, a fire in 2004 damaged two factory buildings. These buildings were on about 18 acres of land. Demolition of the buildings began after the fire. By 2015, all the buildings were gone, including the tall smokestack, which was removed on March 26.
