London and South Western Railway facts for kids
The London and South Western Railway (LSWR) was an important railway company in England. It operated from 1838 until 1922. The company first started as the London and Southampton Railway. Its main line connected Waterloo station in London to Southampton.
Over time, the LSWR grew a lot. Its railway lines reached many more places. The network stretched all the way to Plymouth, passing through cities like Salisbury and Exeter. There were also smaller lines, called branches, that went to towns like Ilfracombe and Padstow. From Southampton, other branches led to popular places like Bournemouth and Weymouth. The LSWR also connected many towns in Hampshire and Berkshire, including Portsmouth and Reading.
In 1923, a big change happened in British railways. Many different railway companies, including the LSWR, joined together. This event was called the "grouping of railways." The LSWR became part of a new, larger company called the Southern Railway.
