The Longleaf bluet (scientific name: Houstonia longifolia) is a small, pretty plant. It's also known as the long-leaved bluet or longleaf summer bluet. This plant is a perennial, which means it lives for more than two years and comes back each growing season. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, which also includes coffee plants!
You can find the Longleaf bluet growing across much of the eastern United States and Canada. It likes to grow in forests on higher ground, especially where the soil is dry, sandy, or not very rich in nutrients. This lovely plant usually blooms, showing its small flowers, from June through August.
Where the Longleaf Bluet Grows
This plant is quite widespread! In the United States, it grows in almost all states east of the Mississippi River. You can also find it further west in states like North Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Sometimes, small groups of these plants are even found in Kansas and Texas.
In Canada, the Longleaf bluet grows in many provinces. These include Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. It's a tough little plant that can adapt to many different places.
Different Kinds of Longleaf Bluet
Scientists have identified two main types, or "varieties," of the Longleaf bluet. These varieties are slightly different from each other, often in how their leaves or flowers look.
