The title of Lord Forbes is a very old and important noble title in Scotland. It is one of the oldest "Lordships of Parliament" in the Peerage of Scotland. A Lordship of Parliament is a special type of noble title that gives the holder a seat in the Scottish Parliament (and later, the British Parliament).
The title was first created around 1436 for Alexander de Forbes. He was already a powerful landowner, known as the feudal baron of Forbes. We don't know the exact date the title was made, but by 1442, he was already called Lord Forbes.

A Look at the Lords Forbes
Over the centuries, many members of the Forbes family have held this important title. They have played different roles in Scottish and British history.
Key Figures and Their Roles
- The twelfth Lord Forbes was an important leader in his area. He served as the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire. A Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county.
- The seventeenth Lord Forbes was a general in the Army. He also represented Scottish nobles in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament. He did this from 1806 to 1843.
- His son, the eighteenth Lord, was a soldier too. He fought in the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
- The nineteenth Lord Forbes also served as a Scottish Representative Peer from 1874 to 1906.
- Later, the twenty-first Lord Forbes was a Scottish Representative Peer between 1917 and 1924.
- The twenty-second Lord Forbes, Nigel Forbes, was also a Scottish Representative Peer from 1955 to 1963. After 1963, all Scottish peers automatically got a seat in the House of Lords. He even worked in the government as the Minister of State for Scotland from 1958 to 1959. This role meant he helped manage Scottish affairs for the government.
The Current Lord Forbes
Today, the title is held by Malcolm Nigel Forbes. He is the twenty-third Lord Forbes and became Lord in 2013. He is also the Chief of Clan Forbes, which means he is the traditional head of the Forbes family.
Related Forbes Families
The Forbes family is quite large! For example, the Hon. Patrick Forbes, who was the third son of the second Lord Forbes, is an ancestor of two other noble families: the Earls of Granard and the Forbes baronets of Craigievar. Also, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo are descended from Sir William Forbes, who was the brother of the very first Lord Forbes.
Family Home: Castle Forbes
The main home of the Lord Forbes family is Forbes Castle. It is located near Alford in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
