Lord Kirkcudbright was a special title in the Peerage of Scotland. This means it was a noble rank given to important people in Scotland. The title was created for Sir Robert Maclellan of Bombie. This happened in 1633 when King Charles I of England visited Scotland. Sir Robert Maclellan had already received another honor in 1631. This was a baronet title from Nova Scotia.

Early Maclellan Family History

The Maclellan family has a long history. A knight named Sir John (Maclellan) de Bondeby was with the Scottish leader Sir William Wallace. This was in 1298 during the Battle of Falkirk. After the battle, Sir John sailed with Wallace from Kirkcudbright to France. They went to ask King Philip IV for help. They wanted support in their fight against King Edward I of England.

The name Maclellan is thought to come from "son or servant of Gillie." This refers to St. Fillan. The word "Fillan" or "faelchu" means wolf in old Irish. The Maclellan family motto is "Think on."

Maclellans in Galloway

The MacLellan family was very large in Galloway in the late 1300s. Galloway is a region in Scotland. The family gave its name to a town called Balmaclellan. This town is in the Stewartry of Galloway. It is believed that John MacLellan received the Balmaclellan lands in 1466. King James III of Scotland gave him these lands. John MacLellan planned to build a church there. By the early 1400s, there were many MacLellan knights. There were at least fourteen knights of that name living in Galloway.

Family Challenges and Recoveries

The Maclellan family faced some tough times. In 1452, Sir Patrick Maclellan of Bombie had a conflict with the 8th Earl of Douglas. This happened at the Earl's stronghold, Threave Castle. After this event, the Maclellan Barony of Bomby was lost. Other family lands were also taken away. This happened because of family disagreements that were not approved by the King.

However, the Maclellans recovered some lands in 1455. King James II of Scotland helped them. He had the support of the Maclellans. Together, they attacked Threave Castle. They won a big victory over the 'Black Douglas' clan.
