Discovering the Lost City Museum

A Look Back in Time

The Lost City Museum is built right on top of an actual ancient site. This site was once home to the Ancestral Puebloans, who lived there long ago.

The museum itself was built in 1935 by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps. This group helped people find jobs during a tough time in history. The National Park Service then ran the museum.

Its main job was to show off amazing artifacts found at the Pueblo Grande de Nevada archaeological sites. These sites were going to be partly covered by the new Lake Mead. Lake Mead was created when the Hoover Dam was built.

In 1981, the museum got bigger. An extension was added to protect some of the ancient ruins. This allowed visitors to see these important historical remains up close.

What You Can See Today

The museum offers a special experience for visitors. You can explore a rebuilt Puebloan house-site. It shows what their homes might have looked like.

Inside the museum, you'll find many interesting displays. They show how archaeologists carefully dug up the ancient sites. You can also see the real artifacts found during these digs. There are old photos from the original excavations too.

One cool feature is an excavated pithouse. This was a type of home dug partly into the ground. You can also see more reconstructed Puebloan houses.

The museum has many examples of what the early inhabitants used. You can see pottery, shells, and jewelry. These items help tell the story of the people who lived here centuries ago.
