History of Lostock
The name Lostock has an interesting past! One idea is that it comes from "Old English" words. Hlose meant "pig" and stoc meant "farm," perhaps referring to a pigsty. Another idea is that the name comes from a "Celtic" word, llostog, which means "beaver." This might suggest a stream where beavers lived a long time ago. Many place names in Lancashire have Celtic roots.
Lostock has been called different names over the centuries: Lostoc in 1212, Lastok in 1279, and Lostok in 1292.
In the Middle Ages, Lostock was part of a large land area controlled by Manchester. Later, it was owned by important families like the Hultons, Andertons, and Blundells. Lostock Hall was a big house built for the Anderton family in 1563, during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. The main house was taken down in 1824, but its old gatehouse still stands. This gatehouse is a very important historical building.
During World War II, a company called De Havilland made aircraft propellers in Lostock. These were important parts for airplanes used in the war.
Lostock's Geography
Lostock used to be a small village, or "hamlet," covering about 1,364 acres of land. It was located about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) west of Bolton. Chew Moor, in the southwest part of Lostock, was the main settlement. It was a group of small houses where farm workers and tenant farmers lived.
