What's in a Name? The Warhawks Nickname
The sports teams at Louisiana–Monroe are known as the Warhawks.
Why the Nickname Changed
For 75 years, ULM's mascot was the "Indians." But on January 30, 2006, the university president, James Cofer, announced a change. This happened because the NCAA (the main college sports organization) decided that mascots based on Indigenous themes were not allowed. The NCAA felt these mascots were "hostile and abusive" to Native Americans.
Even though ULM tried to keep the "Indians" name, they had to change it. A special committee helped choose a new mascot. They asked for ideas from students, staff, alumni, and the public.
The top three ideas were "Warhawks," "Bayou Gators," and "Bayou Hawks." On April 5, 2006, "Warhawks" was chosen as the new mascot. The change officially happened on June 26, 2006. This new name honors Major General Claire Lee Chennault. He was a famous pilot from World War II. His Air Force unit used a plane called the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Even though the name comes from a plane, the team's logos mostly show bird images.
