The Life of Love Brewster
Growing Up
Love Brewster was born in Leiden, Holland, around 1611. We don't have his exact birth records. He passed away in Duxbury, Massachusetts, between October 1650 and January 1651. This date comes from his will and when his belongings were listed. Love was the son of Elder William Brewster, a Pilgrim leader and spiritual elder of the Plymouth Colony, and his wife, Mary. When he was about nine years old, Love sailed with his parents and his brother, Wrestling, on the Mayflower to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
His Family Life
Love Brewster married Sarah Collier in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on May 15, 1634. Sarah was born in London, England, in 1616. She died in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in 1691. Sarah's father, William Collier, was one of the people who invested money in the Plymouth Colony. Sarah's sister, Mary Collier, married Thomas Prence, who later became a governor of Plymouth Colony. After Love passed away, Sarah married Richard Parke in 1656.
His Work and Service
On March 2, 1636, Love Brewster became a "Freeman" of the Colony. This meant he had the right to own land and vote. Love and Sarah settled in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, around 1636 or 1637, right next to his father. Love was a successful farmer throughout his life.
He served as a volunteer in the Pequot War in 1637. He was also part of Captain Myles Standish's Duxbury Company in 1643. In 1648, he served on the grand jury for Duxbury. Love was one of the people who helped found Bridgewater, Massachusetts, even though he probably never lived there himself.
His Passing
Love Brewster died around January 1650 or 1651 in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Governor William Bradford wrote that "Love lived till this year 1650 and dyed, & left 4 children, now living." He was likely buried in Duxbury, but his exact burial place is not known.
His Children
Love Brewster and Sarah Collier had four children:
- Sarah, born around 1635
- Nathaniel, born around 1637
- William, born around 1645
- Wrestling, who passed away on January 1, 1697. He married a woman named Mary, and they had eight children.
