Lu Sheng-Yen (Chinese: 盧勝彥; pinyin: Lú Shèngyàn, born on June 27, 1945) is a Buddhist teacher. He was born in Taiwan and is now also an American citizen. His followers often call him Grand Master Lu.
He is the founder and spiritual leader of the True Buddha School. This is a new religious group that combines ideas from Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. His followers also know him as Living Buddha Lian Sheng. They see him as a special spiritual leader.
The True Buddha School says it has more than five million followers around the world. Most of these followers live in places like Taiwan, China, Macau, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Lu Sheng-Yen travels often between the United States and Taiwan.
Early Life and Spiritual Journey
Lu Sheng-Yen was born in 1945 in what is now Chiayi County, Taiwan. He grew up in a Christian family and went to a Protestant school.
He studied Survey Engineering and graduated from Chung Cheng Institute of Technology. When he was in his early twenties, he worked as a survey engineer for the Taiwan military. He also taught Sunday School at a church.
In 1969, Lu Sheng-Yen had a special spiritual experience. He wrote that a spiritual being helped him understand his true self and purpose. This experience guided him to follow the teachings of other spiritual leaders.
Writings and Family
Lu Sheng-Yen is a very active writer. Over 40 years, he has written many books. He has published 240 books in Traditional Chinese.
Lu Sheng-Yen is married to Lian Hsiang. She is also a spiritual teacher in the True Buddha School. His followers call her Shimu, which means Grand Madam. Before he became a monk, they had two children together.
