Lucas Digne (born on July 20, 1993) is a French professional footballer. He plays as a left back for the Aston Villa club and the French national team.
Digne started his career at Lille. He then joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2013. After a loan spell at Roma, he moved to Barcelona in July 2016. He won many trophies with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. In August 2018, he joined Everton. He played 113 games for them before moving to Aston Villa in January 2022.
Digne helped the France under-20 team win the 2013 World Cup. He played his first senior international game for France in March 2014. He represented France in major tournaments like the 2014 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2016, and UEFA Euro 2020.

Lucas Digne's Club Journey
Starting at Lille
Lucas Digne was born in Meaux, France. He grew up playing football at Lille. On July 27, 2010, he signed his first professional contract with the club. For the 2011–12 season, Digne joined the main team. He made his first professional appearance on October 26, 2011. This was in a big 6–1 win against Sedan.
In January 2012, Digne signed a longer contract with Lille until 2016. He played his first Ligue 1 game on January 28. He came on for the last two minutes of a 3–0 win. Lille finished third in the league that season.
Digne became a regular player in the 2012–13 season. He helped Lille win games and even scored his first goal on April 7, 2013. It was a penalty in a 5–0 home win. Two weeks later, he scored again in a 2–1 victory.
Time at Paris Saint-Germain
On July 17, 2013, Digne joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He signed a five-year deal. He was a substitute when PSG won the 2013 Trophée des Champions on August 3. His first game for PSG was on September 13. PSG won both the league and the league cup that season. Digne was a backup player to Maxwell.
Digne played the full game in the 2014 Trophée des Champions, which PSG won 2–0. PSG won all four domestic trophies in the 2014–15 season. Digne was a substitute in their cup final wins.
Loan to Roma
On August 26, 2015, Digne moved to Italian club Roma on a one-year loan. He made his debut five days later. He played the whole game in a 2–1 win against Juventus.
Digne scored his first goal for Roma on September 26. It was a header in a 5–1 home win. He scored again on February 12, 2016, from a long shot. On April 17, he scored in a 3–3 draw. Roma finished third in the league that season. Digne said he wanted to stay with Roma permanently.
Playing for Barcelona

Digne joined Spanish club Barcelona on July 13, 2016. He signed a five-year contract. On August 14, 2016, Digne played his first game for Barcelona. It was a 2–0 win against Sevilla.
He played 26 games in his first season at the Camp Nou. He scored one goal in a big 7–0 cup win. Barcelona won the Copa del Rey that season. Digne was a substitute in the final.
Digne played 20 games in the 2017–18 season. Barcelona won both the league and the cup. On October 18, 2017, he scored a goal in a Champions League game.
Moving to Everton
Digne joined English club Everton on August 1, 2018. He signed a five-year deal. He made his debut ten days later in a 2–2 draw. In his first start on August 29, he helped set up a goal. Digne quickly became Everton's main left back.
He scored his first goal for Everton on December 10. It was a free kick in a 2–2 draw. Sixteen days later, he scored two goals in a 5–1 win. At the end of his first season, Digne was named Everton's Player of the Season. He shared the Players' Player of the Season award.
In January 2022, Digne decided he wanted to leave Everton. He had some disagreements with the manager.
Joining Aston Villa
On January 13, 2022, Aston Villa signed Digne from Everton. He signed a contract until 2026. He played his first game for Aston Villa two days later. It was a 2–2 draw at home. On August 23, Digne scored his first goal for the team. It was in a 4–1 cup win.
On September 21, 2022, Digne got an ankle injury while playing for France. He returned to play on October 29. On November 6, Digne scored his first league goal for Aston Villa. It was in a 3–1 home win.
On August 23, 2023, Digne helped set up three goals in a 5–0 win. This was in a European qualifying game. A month later, he scored in the group stage of the same competition. On March 2, 2024, Digne scored his second league goal for Aston Villa. It was a late winning goal in a 3–2 victory.
Lucas Digne's International Career
Digne played for various French youth teams. He represented France at the U16, U17, and U18 levels. In 2013, he played in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. He played every game as France won the title.
At 20 years old, Digne was called up to the senior French team in February 2014. He made his debut on March 5 in a 2–0 win.
In June 2014, Digne was chosen for the French squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He played one game in the tournament. France reached the quarter-finals.
Digne was part of the French squad that finished second at UEFA Euro 2016 in France. However, he did not play in any games. He was also on standby for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
At UEFA Euro 2020, Digne came on as a substitute in a group game. But he also got an injury during the match.
Digne was not chosen for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The coach wanted defenders who could play in different positions.
Lucas Digne's Life Outside Football
On December 27, 2014, Digne married his girlfriend, Tiziri. They met when they were in school. They now have a son and a daughter.
Digne was in Barcelona when a terror attack happened on August 17, 2017. He helped give first aid to the people who were hurt.
