Lucile Watson (born May 27, 1879 – died June 24, 1962) was a talented actress from Canada. She spent most of her life working in the United States. Lucile was well-known for playing strong, older women in her movies and plays.

Early Life

Lucile Watson was born in Quebec, Canada. She grew up in Ottawa. Her father was an officer in the British Army. Even though her father wanted her to do something else, Lucile decided to become an actress. She moved to New York City and went to a special school to learn acting.

Acting Career

Lucile Watson started her acting career on stage. Her first performance on Broadway was in a play called Hearts Aflame in 1902. After that, she appeared in many other plays. One of her early roles was in The Girl with Green Eyes. This play was written by Clyde Fitch.

She acted in many of Fitch's plays over the years. Several young actors who later became famous also appeared in these plays. These included John Barrymore and Thomas Meighan.

Stage Performances

Lucile Watson was mainly a stage actress. She performed in 39 different plays on Broadway. Some of her famous stage roles were in plays like Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines and The Importance of Being Earnest. She also starred in Pride and Prejudice on stage.

Film Roles

Lucile Watson's first movie was a silent film in 1916. It was called The Girl with Green Eyes, just like the play she had been in. She did not act in another movie until 1930. In 1939, she played a memorable role in the movie The Women. She played the wise mother of the main character.

One of her most important roles was in the play Watch on the Rhine in 1941. This play was about fighting against fascism. She acted alongside Paul Lukas. Two years later, they both acted in the movie version of Watch on the Rhine. Lucile Watson's performance in this film was highly praised. She was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This is a very big award in movies.

In 1949, Lucile Watson played Aunt March in the movie Little Women. The movie also starred Elizabeth Taylor. The next year, she acted with Joan Crawford in the movie Harriet Craig.

Later Years and Death

Lucile Watson passed away on June 24, 1962.
