Lucius William O'Brien (born June 21, 1864 – died December 9, 1929) was an important person in Irish history. He held a special title called the 15th Baron Inchiquin. This title was passed down in his family, meaning it was a hereditary peerage. He was also known as the Chief of the Name for the O'Brien dynasty, which meant he was the main leader of the O'Brien family. He was also called the Prince of Thomond in the old Irish nobility.

Early Life and Education

Lucius O'Brien was born in England on June 21, 1864. He was the second of four children and the oldest son of Edward O'Brien, 14th Baron Inchiquin. His mother was Emily A'Court. He grew up in a place called Belmore, near Bishop's Waltham in Hampshire.

He went to a famous school called Eton College. This school is known for educating many important people in British history.

Military and Political Career

Lucius O'Brien started his military career in 1885. He joined the Royal Irish Rifles. A year later, in 1886, he moved to the Rifle Brigade, an English army regiment. He served there until 1893. Later, he became an Honorary Colonel for the Clare Royal Field Artillery Reserve Volunteers. This was a special role where he helped lead and support the reserve forces.

Political Roles

Lucius O'Brien was a member of the Conservative Party. In 1885, he tried to become a member of the British House of Commons. He ran for election in the Eastern Division of County Clare but did not win.

In 1895, he worked as a State Steward for the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This was a high-ranking official who represented the British monarch in Ireland.

When his father passed away in 1900, Lucius O'Brien inherited his title and became the 15th Baron Inchiquin. This meant he became an Irish Representative Peer in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the upper house of the British Parliament. As a Representative Peer, he spoke for Ireland's interests there.

In 1921, he was chosen to be part of the Senate of Southern Ireland. This was a new political group. However, it was soon ended in 1922 when the Irish Free State was formed.

Local Government Roles

Lucius O'Brien also held important local positions. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for County Clare. This role involved helping the Lord Lieutenant with local duties. He was also a Justice of the Peace for County Clare. This meant he helped keep law and order in the area. In 1898, he served as the High Sheriff of Clare, which was another important local law enforcement role. He was also a Justice of the Peace for the county of Salop, which is now known as Shropshire in England.

Family Life

On January 14, 1896, Lord Inchiquin married Ethel Jane Foster. Their wedding took place at Richard's Castle. Ethel Jane Foster was the daughter of Johnston Jonas Foster. Her family lived at Moor Park near Ludlow, Shropshire. This place later became Lord Inchiquin's home in England.

Lucius and Ethel had six children together:

  • Donough Edward Foster O'Brien, who became the 16th Baron Inchiquin (born January 5, 1897, died October 19, 1968)
  • Hon Katharine Beryl O'Brien (born April 19, 1898)
  • Phaedrig Lucius Ambrose O'Brien, who became the 17th Baron Inchiquin (born April 4, 1900, died 1982)
  • Hon Fionn Myles Maryons O'Brien (born October 28, 1903, died August 2, 1977). He was the father of Conor Myles John O'Brien, 18th Baron Inchiquin.
  • Hon Griselda Etheldreda Clodagh O'Brien (born October 19, 1906)
  • Hon Finola Helga Laetitia Monica O'Brien (born September 22, 1910, died 1975)

Lord Inchiquin passed away on December 9, 1929, when he was sixty-five years old. After his death, two of his sons, Donough and Phaedrig, took on the title of Baron Inchiquin.
