History of Lucky Bay

A Bay on the South Coast of New Holland
A Bay on the South Coast of New Holland, an old painting of Lucky Bay by William Westall.

Lucky Bay got its name from a famous explorer named Matthew Flinders. In 1802, Flinders was sailing his ship, the HMS Investigator, through a tricky area full of islands and rocks called the Recherche Archipelago. Night was coming, and his ship was surrounded by dangers.

Suddenly, a summer storm hit! Flinders needed a safe place to hide. He bravely steered his ship towards the main coast, hoping to find shelter. Luckily, they found a small sandy bay that was protected from the storm. Because they were so lucky to find this safe spot, Flinders decided to call it "Lucky Bay." He wrote about how dangerous the situation was and how grateful he was to find such a good place to anchor his ship.

The Whitest Sand in the World?

In 2017, scientists did a special test to find out which beach in Australia had the whitest sand. Guess what? Lucky Bay won! It was scientifically proven to have the whitest sand in Australia, and maybe even the whole world!

This test looked at sand samples from the top 10 centimetres of the beach, right where the water meets the sand dunes. A soil expert named Noel Schoknecht found that Lucky Bay's sand was whiter than many other famous beaches, including Hyams Beach in New South Wales. The whitest sands are usually made of tiny, pure white grains of quartz with very few other things mixed in.
