Early Life and Childhood
Ludivine Sagnier was born on July 3, 1979, in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France. She grew up in a town called Sèvres. Her mother was a secretary, and her father was an English professor at the University of Paris. She has one sister named Delphine.
When she was a child, Ludivine had surgery to remove a small, harmless growth from her stomach. After this, she also got sick with meningitis, but she got better.
Ludivine started taking piano lessons when she was young. However, she didn't enjoy playing music in front of others. Instead, she asked her parents if she could take acting classes. She said she wanted to "escape classical music" because everyone in her family was a musician. She was noticed during one of these acting classes and got a role. It took her years to realize that acting was what she truly wanted to do as a job.
Acting Career Highlights
Early Roles (1989–2003)
Ludivine Sagnier started her acting journey at just nine years old. Her first movie was Les Maris, les Femmes, les Amants in 1989. In the early 1990s, she had other small parts, including a role in Cyrano de Bergerac with famous actor Gerard Depardieu.
As an adult, her career really took off. She became very successful in three movies directed by François Ozon. These films were Water Drops on Burning Rocks (2000), 8 Women (2002), and Swimming Pool (2003). For 8 Women, Ludivine and her seven co-stars all won acting awards together.
In Swimming Pool, a mystery movie, she starred alongside Charlotte Rampling. Her work in this film earned her many awards, including a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the César Awards. Also in 2003, Ludivine played Tinker Bell in P.J. Hogan's live-action movie Peter Pan. She was first brought in to help the special effects team create a computer model for Tinker Bell. But she impressed everyone so much that she was chosen to play the actual role!
Focus on French Cinema (2004–2020)
Even though she could have had a big international career after Swimming Pool and Peter Pan, Ludivine chose to mostly work in French movies. She said she didn't like how competitive the Hollywood film industry felt.
She appeared in many French films during this time. Some of these include Love Songs (2007) and A Secret (2007), which earned her another César nomination. In 2011, she returned to international work with a role in the movie The Devil's Double. In 2016, she acted with Jude Law in the TV series The Young Pope. She played the same role again in the follow-up series The New Pope in 2020.
Recent Work (2021–Present)
Since 2021, Ludivine Sagnier has been starring in the Netflix crime series Lupin. She plays Claire Laurent, who is the former wife of the main character, Assane Diop (Omar Sy). She is also the mother of their son, Raoul. The show is based on the stories of Arsène Lupin and became a huge hit around the world. Critics have praised Ludivine's performance as Claire.
After the success of Lupin, Ludivine was cast in several English-language historical dramas. In the STARZ series The Serpent Queen (2022–2024), she played Diane de Poitiers. This character was a rival to Catherine de' Medici. Ludivine said she liked playing Diane because she was interested in playing a character who was a bit of a villain, which she hadn't done much before.
She also appeared as Thérésa Tallien in Ridley Scott's movie Napoleon (2023). Her part was only in the director's special version of the film. In 2024, she played composer Anne Louise Brillon de Jouy in the Apple TV+ series Franklin. This series is about Benjamin Franklin's trip to France during the American Revolutionary War.
In 2024, Ludivine Sagnier was in the movie And Their Children After Them. She also worked again with director François Ozon for the film When Fall Is Coming, after not working together for twenty years. That same year, she was nominated for a Molière Award for her performance in the play Le Consentement.
Personal Life
Ludivine Sagnier has three daughters. Her first daughter was born in 2005 with her former boyfriend, actor Nicolas Duvauchelle. She is now in a relationship with director Kim Chapiron, and they have two daughters together.
In a 2019 interview, Ludivine shared that she admired Christiane Taubira, a former Minister of Justice in France. In 2024, she was one of many artists who signed a petition. This petition asked the French president to officially recognize the state of Palestine.
Since 2020, Ludivine Sagnier has been teaching an acting course at the École Kourtrajmé. This school was started in 2018 by director Ladj Ly. It helps students from different backgrounds who want to work in acting and the film industry.
