The Lugton Water is a river in Scotland. It is the biggest stream that flows into the River Garnock. The Lugton Water is about 14 miles (23 km) long.

It starts at Loch Libo in Uplawmoor, which is about 395 feet above sea level. The river then flows through places like Lugton, Neilston, Beith, Dunlop, Stewarton, and Kilwinning. Finally, it joins the River Garnock near Kilwinning. This is just after it goes through Eglinton Country Park.

What's in a Name?

Long ago, a mapmaker named Timothy Pont called this river 'Ludgar' or 'Lugdurr'. The lake where the river starts, Loch Libo, had a different name in the 1300s. It was called Loch le Bog Syde, which means the Bogside Loch.

The River's Journey

The Lugton Water flows through Eglinton Country Park. Over time, people have changed the river's path here. They built weirs (small dams) and made parts of the river straighter. Some old bends in the river were filled in, and small lakes were removed.

Several smaller streams join the Lugton Water. The Duniflat Burn flows into it from the East Ayrshire side. The Bells Burn also joins it from the East Renfrewshire side.

The Bungle Burn is another stream that joins the Lugton Water. It flows out of the Blae Loch. This meeting point is near the Bungleburn Bridge, close to the village of Burnhouse.

The river also flows past Eglinton Loch inside Eglinton Country Park. When there is a lot of rain, the Lugton Water can overflow and its waters will flow into Eglinton Loch.

River Life

The Lugton Water is home to different types of fish. You can find fresh-water trout and sea-trout here. Sometimes, salmon also swim in its waters.
