Luis Severino (born February 20, 1994), also known as "Sevy", is a talented professional baseball pitcher. He plays for the Athletics in Major League Baseball (MLB). Luis was born in the Dominican Republic. Before joining the Athletics, he played for the New York Yankees and New York Mets.

Severino first signed with the Yankees in 2011. He made his big league debut in 2015. After a tough 2016 season, he became one of the best pitchers in the league in 2017. He was even named an All-Star twice, in 2017 and 2018. He missed some seasons due to injuries. After playing for the Mets in 2024, he signed with the Athletics.

Playing Career

Starting in the Minor Leagues

Luis Severino signed with the New York Yankees on December 26, 2011. He received a $225,000 bonus. He had always been a Yankees fan. When he started, his fastball could reach 91 miles per hour.

He began his professional journey in the Dominican Summer League. In 2013, he moved up to the Charleston RiverDogs. His fastball speed increased to 97 mph.

Before the 2014 season, Baseball America said he was the Yankees' ninth-best young player. He played for Charleston, then the Tampa Yankees. Later, he was promoted to the Trenton Thunder. He even played in the 2014 All-Star Futures Game. In 2014, he had a 6–5 record with a 2.46 earned run average (ERA). He also had 127 strikeouts.

In 2015, Severino was ranked the best young player in the Yankees' system. He started the season with Trenton. He then moved up to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He had a great record of 7–0 with a 1.91 ERA there. The Yankees decided not to trade him. They wanted him for their team.

2015: His First Big Season

Luis Severino made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on August 5, 2015. He pitched against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. He was only 21 years old. This made him the youngest pitcher to start a game in the 2015 season.

In his first game, he pitched five innings. He allowed only two hits and one earned run. He also struck out seven batters. He finished his first season with a 5–3 record. His ERA was 2.89, and he had 56 strikeouts.

2016: A Learning Year

Severino started the 2016 season in the Yankees' main pitching group. He faced some challenges early on. He was placed on the disabled list due to a triceps injury. Later, he was sent to the Triple-A team.
