Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Luisa Ottolini is a famous Italian physicist. She was born on July 10, 1954, in Tortona, Italy. She is known for her important work in studying tiny parts of rocks and minerals using special scientific tools.

About Luisa Ottolini's Journey

Luisa Ottolini finished her physics studies in 1978. She graduated from the University of Pavia in Italy. From 1982 to 1986, she led a section at a special lab in Novara. This lab studied light metals. In 1987, she started a big project. She helped set up the first national lab in Italy for something called Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). This lab is in Pavia. Since then, she has been the head of this important SIMS Lab. Starting in 1989, she made the SIMS service available to other universities and research groups. She helped with over 90 research projects. From 2002 to 2005, she led a research team in Pavia. This team was part of a big European project called EUROMELT. Between 2005 and 2017, she was the head of the CNR-Institute of Geosciences and Geo-resources (IGG) in Pavia. CNR is Italy's National Research Council.

Luisa Ottolini has written many scientific papers. She has co-authored over 150 international papers. Five of these were published in the famous science magazine Nature.

What Luisa Ottolini Studies

Luisa Ottolini's main research uses SIMS technology. SIMS helps scientists measure very small amounts of elements in rocks. She studies elements like Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron. She also looks at elements like Hydrogen, Fluorine, Chlorine, and Carbon. These are found in geological samples. Her work helps scientists understand how rocks and minerals form. She studies things like melt inclusions and silicate minerals. This helps us learn more about Earth's processes.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Luisa Ottolini has received several important awards for her work:

  • 2004 - She received an award from CNR. This was part of the celebration for CNR's 80th anniversary. She was one of 12 female researchers honored for helping science in Italy.
  • 2004 - A new amphibole mineral was named after her. It is called Ferri-ottoliniite. This was to honor her "fundamental contribution" to studying minerals with ion-probe analysis. This means her work greatly helped in understanding light elements in minerals.
  • 2006 - She was included in Who’s Who in the World. This book lists important people from around the globe. She was also listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
  • Since 2013 - She has been a partner of the University of Liège in Belgium.
