Lumino is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It is part of the Bellinzona district.

History of Lumino

Lumino was first mentioned in old writings in 1168. Back then, it was known as locus Lugomini. Its location was important because it was at the start of the Val Mesolcina valley. This suggests people lived there a very long time ago.

In 1335, Lumino was listed as part of the County of Bellinzona. It was also part of a larger community with Castione until 1818. The Church of St. Mamette was first mentioned in 1237. It became the main church for the area before 1591.

For many years, there were disagreements about the border between Lumino and the nearby village of San Vittore in Graubünden. These disputes finally ended in 1776 when the border was officially set.

In recent times, Lumino has changed a lot. It used to be a small farming village. Now, many new houses have been built. Also, some small but successful businesses have moved there. This means most people who live in Lumino now work outside the town.
