Lutz Wahl (born November 2, 1869 – died December 30, 1928) was an important American soldier. He became a Major General in the United States Army. From 1927 to 1928, he held a very important job as the Adjutant General of the U.S. Army. This role meant he was in charge of many administrative tasks for the entire army.

Early Life and Education

Lutz Wahl was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 2, 1869. He showed great promise early on. In 1891, he graduated from the United States Military Academy. This is a famous school where future army officers are trained.

Military Career Highlights

After graduating, Wahl began his long career in the army. He served with the 5th Infantry in Louisiana and Georgia. Later, he became a Professor of Military Science at Louisiana State University. This meant he taught military skills to college students.

Serving in Wars and Expeditions

Wahl took part in several important conflicts. During the Spanish–American War, he served with the 21st Infantry. He also helped prepare volunteer soldiers from Mississippi for duty.

He spent time serving in the Philippines from 1899 to 1901. This was during the Philippine–American War. He fought in battles like Guadeloupe Ridge. He returned to the Philippines again in 1906 and 1911.

Wahl also served in Colorado and Montana. He graduated from the United States Army War College in 1916. This college helps senior officers learn advanced military strategies. He was also involved in the Pancho Villa Expedition in Eagle Pass, Texas.

World War I Service

When World War I began, Wahl became a key leader. He commanded the 58th Infantry Regiment. He led them through training in places like Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Later, he directed operations for the Army General Staff. He then commanded the 14th Infantry Brigade. He was promoted to temporary Brigadier General. He led his brigade from training in Texas to combat in France. They arrived just in time for the final battles before the war ended.

Post-War Leadership

After World War I, Wahl stayed in France for occupation duty. In September 1919, he took command of the 7th Infantry Division. He then worked on a board that handled claims from civilians. These claims were for property lost or damaged during the war.

He continued his education, graduating from the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1921. He was then promoted to permanent brigadier general. He became an assistant to the Adjutant General of the Army.

From 1927 until his death, Wahl served as the Adjutant General. He was promoted to Major General for this important role.

Awards and Recognition

Lutz Wahl received the Distinguished Service Medal. This award honored his excellent service during World War I.

Personal Life

Lutz Wahl was married twice. His first wife was Emma Joubert, and they had two children, Gretchen Marie and George Douglas. His second wife was Fenella Hero Castanado. With her, he had a daughter named Barbara and a stepdaughter named Fenella.

His son, George Douglas Wahl, also became a career army officer. He achieved the rank of brigadier general, following in his father's footsteps.

Death and Burial

Lutz Wahl died in Washington, D.C. on December 30, 1928. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This is a special cemetery where many American heroes are laid to rest.
