Luxomni, Georgia facts for kids
Luxomni is a small area in Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of the larger county. Luxomni is located near the city of Lilburn.
It started in 1891 around a train station, called a "depot." This station was for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The train line went to Lawrenceville, which is the main city, or "county seat," of Gwinnett County. Over time, Luxomni has become part of Lilburn and the bigger Gwinnett County. People don't really use the name "Luxomni" much anymore in everyday talk.
What's in a Name?
The name "Luxomni" comes from the Latin language. It means "light for all." A civil engineer who worked for the railroad suggested the name. He saw it on a sign for a health tonic for women.
Early Luxomni
Luxomni used to have its own important places. It had a post office where people could send and receive mail. There was also a Masonic lodge, which is a meeting place for a community group. A general store sold many different goods, like food and tools.
A Baptist church was also part of the community. The Luxomni Baptist Church, which started in 1895, is still active today.
Traces of the Past
For a long time, you could still see the old general store. Its ruins were near Luxomni Road and Arcado Road, right next to the church. This old building has now been taken down.
Just past where the general store was, there's an old building hidden in the trees. It has a faded sign that says "Luxomni Sewing Club." If you keep going down Luxomni Road, you'll reach Lawrenceville Highway (Route 29).
Luxomni Road is still the main way to identify this historic area.
