The Old "Bishop's Palace"
In the hamlet of Lydstep, you can find the ruins of an old building. It is called the "Bishop's Palace." This building is very important. It is a Grade I listed ruin. This means it is a building of exceptional historical interest.
What Was the Palace For?
Even though it is called a "palace," it was not a grand home for a king. Instead, it was likely a hunting lodge. This was a special place where Lord St David would stay in the early 14th century. He would use it when he went hunting.
A Place of History
Experts believe this medieval house had a main hall on the first floor. It also had a possible parlor. The lower part had vaulted rooms made of stone. The building was made from limestone. It had a slate roof. People traditionally called it the 'Place of Arms'. It might have been where local court meetings were held.
