History of Lyndhurst
Early Land and Names
The land where Lyndhurst is today was once part of a large area called the Connecticut Western Reserve. This land was bought from the Iroquois people in 1796 by a group called the Connecticut Land Company. In 1797, Moses Cleaveland named the area east of the Cuyahoga River "Euclid." He named it after Euclid, a famous Greek mathematician.
Euclid Township was officially formed in 1809. For many years, most people living in this area were Native Americans. This changed after the War of 1812.
Growth and Development
In 1828, Euclid Township was divided into nine smaller areas. The part that is now Lyndhurst became known as district four.
Since 1877, Mayfield Road (U.S. Route 322) has been the main road for travel. It started as a road made of wood planks where people paid a fee to use it. Today, this road is busy with many shops and restaurants.
Farming was the first main business in the area. As more people moved in, the community became known as Euclidville Village. In 1920, its name changed to Lyndhurst Village. Then, in 1921, Lyndhurst officially became a city.
Population Changes Over Time
The population of Lyndhurst grew quickly after World War II. Many families had more children during the "baby boom" period. Also, many people moved from the city of Cleveland to the suburbs like Lyndhurst.
Lyndhurst's population was highest in the 1970s. By 1980, the city had less open land for new buildings. Also, people started moving to areas even further from the city. Because of this, Lyndhurst's population began to get smaller. In 2010, the number of people living in Lyndhurst was 29% less than its highest point in the 1970s.
