Lytton Springs is a small community in Caldwell County, Texas. It is not an official city, but a place where people live together. In 2000, about 500 people called Lytton Springs home. It is also part of the larger Greater Austin area.

History of Lytton Springs

Lytton Springs started as a settlement in the 1850s. It was first known as Albade. The community even had a post office called Albade, which opened in 1859.

In the early 1860s, people started calling the area Lytton Springs. This new name came from some nearby natural springs. The name was officially changed to Lytton Springs in 1888.

Early Life and Economy

By the mid-1880s, Lytton Springs had a steam-powered cotton gin, a Baptist church, and a general store. Many of the first settlers in the area raised livestock, like cows and sheep.

Later, in the 1900s, growing cotton became more important than ranching. However, ranching became popular again in 1930. In 1925, oil was found in the community. But by the 1940s, only a few oil wells were still producing.

Population Changes Over Time

The number of people living in Lytton Springs has changed a lot.

  • In the mid-1880s, about 125 people lived there.
  • By the 1890s, the population grew to 300.
  • In 1900, there were 131 residents, growing to 200 by the 1920s.
  • The population then dropped to 116 by the 1960s.
  • In the early 1970s, it was 76 people and stayed that way until 1990.
  • By 2000, the population grew a lot, reaching 500 people.

The local post office closed in 1958. Mail for Lytton Springs now comes from Dale. In 1989, maps showed that Lytton Springs had three churches, two cemeteries, and just one business.

Geography and Location

Lytton Springs is located in the northeastern part of Caldwell County. It sits along Farm to Market Road 1854. The community is about ten miles northeast of Lockhart.

Climate in Lytton Springs

The weather in Lytton Springs has hot and humid summers. Winters are usually mild to cool. This type of weather is called a humid subtropical climate. On climate maps, it is often shown as "Cfa."

Education in Lytton Springs

Lytton Springs had its own school back in the mid-1880s. Today, students in the community attend schools in the Lockhart Independent School District.

In the fall of 2016, a new elementary school opened in Lytton Springs. It is called Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary School. The school was named after Alma Brewer Strawn, a respected staff member who taught in the district for many years.

This new school is the first one built outside of the Lockhart city limits. It teaches students from pre-kindergarten (PK) through fifth grade. The elementary schools inside Lockhart now teach kindergarten through fifth grade. The George W. Carver Early Childhood Academy teaches only Pre-kindergarten students.
