Ma Xinyi (born November 3, 1821 – died August 23, 1870) was an important official and military general in China during the late Qing dynasty. He was a Hui Muslim.

Ma Xinyi worked with other leaders like Hu Linyi to create the Green Standard Army. This army helped fight against the Taiping Rebellion. Their efforts helped bring back stability to the Qing dynasty. This period is known as the "Tongzhi Restoration". Ma Xinyi's unexpected death showed there were big disagreements between different armies fighting for the Qing government.

Early Life and Education

Ma Xinyi was born in 1821 in Heze, a city in Shandong province, China. He was very smart and worked hard in his studies.

At 26 years old, in 1847, he passed the difficult imperial examinations. This was a huge achievement in China. He earned the Jinshi degree, which was the highest level you could get.

This special degree allowed him to join the Hanlin Academy. This was a group of very smart scholars who helped the emperor with important tasks.

Important Roles and Leadership

Later, in 1868, Ma Xinyi became the governor-general of Liangjiang. This large area included the provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, and Jiangsu.

He was a very good leader and manager. He was especially skilled at handling problems with people from other countries. For example, he solved issues of kidnapping in his area. This helped prevent big protests against foreigners, especially near the Yangzi river.

A Surprising Event

In 1870, something unexpected happened to Ma Xinyi. He was attacked, and the person responsible was quickly found. This person was identified as Wan Qingxuan (also known as Zhang Wenxiang).

After a special review, Wan Qingxuan was dealt with. Some stories say that Wan Qingxuan had known Ma Xinyi before. Many historical rumors suggest that the Empress Dowager Cixi might have been involved in Ma Xinyi's death.

People also thought that Ma Xinyi's death was linked to disagreements. These were between the official imperial army and a group called the Xiang militia. The Xiang militia had played a big part in stopping the Taiping Rebellion.
