History of Macclenny

Mcclenny1900s

Macclenny was first known as Darbyville. This was because the Darby family owned most of the land in the area. Later, a man named Carr Bowers McClenny married into the Darby family. He then bought much of this land in the late 1800s. His plan was to use the land for its timber (wood).

The town soon became known as McClenny. Carr McClenny started many businesses related to wood. These included cutting down trees, sawmills to process the wood, and making turpentine. The town's name was later changed to The City of Macclenny. This happened because the post office had a rule against using capital letters in the middle of a name. The first post office in Macclenny opened in 1890.

People started settling in Macclenny as early as 1829. However, more people moved there after the American Civil War. In 1888, a serious yellow fever sickness affected the town. Sadly, many residents died. By 1890, the population was 334 people. The town slowly grew and recovered after this difficult time.
