History of Macedon
Macedon became an important inland port because of the Erie Canal. The canal was finished in 1825. Lock 30 of the Erie Canal is still used today.
Early Industry and Growth
In the mid-to-late 1800s, Macedon was home to Bickford & Huffman. This company made grain drills, which are machines used in farming. Later, the company became part of the Oliver Farm Equipment Company.
The community officially became a village in 1856. This meant it had its own local government.
Erie Canal Locks
You can still see parts of the old Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 61. This lock was also called the Upper Macedon Lock. It was built in 1842 and helped boats move up or down the canal.
Today, this area acts as a spillway for the current Lock 30. Lock 30 was built around 1914. It helps boats move about 16.4 feet (5 meters) up or down the canal. Macedon is part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
Village Dissolution
The Village of Macedon officially stopped being a village on March 31, 2017. All its government tasks are now handled by the larger Town of Macedon.
Geography of Macedon

Why Macedon Dissolved its Village Government
For many years, people in Macedon discussed whether the village government was still needed. Some thought getting rid of it would lower taxes for residents. Others worried it would mean fewer services and a loss of the village's unique identity.
Voting on Dissolution
The idea of dissolving the village was put to a vote three times between 2000 and 2010. In 2008, residents voted against it. In 2010, another vote was held, and it failed again.
Finally, in 2015, a third petition to dissolve the village was approved. On June 10, residents voted 300 to 246 in favor of dissolving the village. The plan for dissolution was also approved in a vote on March 15, 2016.
Macedon officially dissolved its village status on March 31, 2017. It was the third village in Wayne County to do so.
Macedon Partners Association
In 2008, a group called The Macedon Partners Association (MPA) was started. It was formed by local government, business owners, and residents working together.
