Macedon is a town in Wayne County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 9,148 people lived here.

The Town of Macedon is named after the ancient kingdom of Macedon, which was the birthplace of Alexander the Great. It is located in the southwest part of Wayne County. The town also includes a smaller area called Macedon hamlet, which used to be a village. Macedon is east of Rochester and west of Syracuse.

What's in a Name?

Macedon got its name from the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon. The word "Macedon" comes from an old Greek word meaning "tall." This might have described the people who lived there, or perhaps the tall mountains in the region. It's like saying "highlanders" or "the tall ones."

Macedon's History

Early Settlers and the Erie Canal

Before European settlers arrived, the land around Macedon was home to the Seneca Nation. They were a tribe that belonged to the Iroquois League.

In 1788, the land was bought from Massachusetts. The first settlers, Webb and Hannah Harwood, came to the area in 1789.

The Erie Canal was built between 1817 and 1825. This important waterway brought many new people to the area. The town of Macedon was officially formed in 1823, while the canal was still being built. It was created from the western part of the Town of Palmyra.

The Erie Canal helped new communities grow, like Wayneport and the Village of Macedon. The village was built around Lock 30, which is a special part of the canal that helps boats move up or down.

Canal Remnants and Old Bridges

You can still see parts of the old Erie Canal today. For example, the remains of Lock 60 (also called the Lower Macedon Lock) are located near Quaker Road. This lock was built in 1841 and was used to raise or lower boats by about 10 feet. It stopped being used in 1914 and is now a park.

Nearby, you can find the foundations of Erie Canal Change Bridge #39. This type of bridge allowed the towpath (a path for horses or mules to pull canal boats) to switch from one side of the canal to the other. This bridge was built in 1881.

Education and Notable Buildings

The Macedon Academy was an important school that operated from 1841 to 1902. It offered a higher level of education than regular district schools, preparing students for college.

During the American Civil War, some soldiers from Macedon joined Company B of the 160th New York Volunteer Infantry. At that time, the town had a population of just over 2,500 people.

Two historic buildings in Macedon, the J. and E. Baker Cobblestone Farmstead and the Charles Bullis House, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites.

The town is also part of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which protects and promotes the history of the Erie Canal.

Macedon's Location

Macedon covers about 38.9 square miles (100.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small amount of water.

The town shares its borders with other towns:

Several state roads pass through Macedon, including New York State Route 31, New York State Route 31F, and New York State Route 350.
