Farmington became a town in 1789, the same year its county was formed. People started settling in the area around this time. Many of the first settlers were Quakers. Quakers are a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs. These early settlers came from Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

In 1824, a man named Arthur Power, along with his two sons and other Quakers, left Farmington. They traveled to found a new town called Farmington, Michigan. The Farmington Quaker Crossroads Historic District is an important historical area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Exploring Farmington's Geography

Farmington is located in a unique area shaped by ice from long ago. The land is generally flat, about 600 feet above sea level. It gently slopes from 700 feet in the south to 500 feet in the north. This area has interesting landforms like drumlins (oval-shaped hills) and eskers (long, winding ridges). These were formed by glaciers.

The town covers about 39.5 square miles (102.12 square kilometers) of land. There are no large lakes, but many small streams and ponds can be found. The drinking water for the town comes from Canandaigua Lake.

Roads and Transportation

Major roads help people travel through Farmington. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) crosses the town. This is a very important highway. New York State Route 332 runs north and south. New York State Route 96 runs east and west. The northern border of Farmington is shared with the town of Macedon in Wayne County.
