History of Macksburg
In 1860, something exciting happened near Duck Creek. People found oil just 59 feet (18 meters) underground on William Rayley's farm. This discovery led to the Macksburg Oil Field, which was one of Ohio's first oil fields.
The discovery caused an "oil boom," meaning many people came to the area hoping to find oil and make money. This boom was biggest in 1886. However, by 1900, oil production in the area had stopped.
A post office opened in Macksburg in 1873. The village might have gotten its name from a local merchant named McIntosh.
