Madden is a small community called a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada. It is part of Rocky View County.

Where is Madden Located?

Madden is found in southern Alberta, Canada. It is about 46 kilometers (28 miles) north of downtown Calgary. You can reach Madden by taking Highway 574. It is also about 16 kilometers (10 miles) west of Crossfield on Highway 2A. Madden is also 19 kilometers (12 miles) west of Highway 2.

A Bit of History

Madden was named after a man called Bernard Madden. He was an early pioneer and a well-known rancher. Bernard Madden arrived in this area in 1876. The community's post office officially opened on May 1, 1931.

What Can You Find in Madden?

Madden has a community hall where people gather. There is also a curling rink, which is a place to play the sport of curling. You can find a meat processor, a campground, and a fire station here. If you enjoy golf, Madden has an 18-hole golf course!

Madden has also been used as a filming location. For example, the 2008 TV show Mayerthorpe was filmed near the hamlet. This show was seen on CTV.

Madden's Railway Past

Madden was once located along a Canadian Pacific Railway line. This railway spur went from Collicutt to Cremona. In the past, Madden also had two grain elevators. You can still see where the old railway used to be. It runs behind the Madden Ice Cream Store, which used to be Dodd's General Store.

Madden's Population

Every few years, a count of people is done. This is called a census. In the 2021 Census, Madden had a population of 10 people. These people lived in 6 homes out of 10 total homes. This was a change from its 2016 population of 28 people.

The land area of Madden is very small, about 0.07 square kilometers. This means there were about 144 people per square kilometer in 2021.

A local count, called the 2018 municipal census, showed Madden had 26 people. This was an increase from 21 people in the 2013 municipal census.
