Madison Whitekiller is an American with Native American heritage. On August 26, 2017, she was crowned Miss Cherokee for the 2017-2018 year. As Miss Cherokee, she served as a special representative for the Cherokee Nation. Her role was to share and celebrate the history, language, and culture of the Cherokee people.
Becoming Miss Cherokee
The Competition
Madison competed against six other young women for the Miss Cherokee crown. This competition happens every year. It is held during the Cherokee National Holiday.
Judges look at several things during the competition. They check how well contestants use the Cherokee language. They also evaluate their cultural presentations. Contestants give speeches about their chosen topics. They also answer questions without much time to prepare.
Madison's Presentation
For her cultural presentation, Madison focused on a special topic. She talked about empowering Cherokee women. She used a traditional Cherokee story to do this. The story explains why the corn husk doll has no face.
