Magnus Hedman's Club Career

Starting His Football Journey

Magnus Hedman was born in Botkyrka, Sweden. He began his football career with youth teams like Vårby Gårds IF and IFK Stockholm. In 1987, he joined AIK. He made his first team debut in the Allsvenskan league in 1990. He was only 17 years old at the time. With AIK, he helped the team win the 1992 Allsvenskan championship. In July 1997, he moved to England to play for Coventry City.

Playing for Coventry City

Magnus was 24 when he first played for Coventry City on 13 December 1997. His team won 4-0 against Tottenham Hotspur. He was the main goalkeeper until February, when an injury made him miss some games. When he returned, Steve Ogrizovic was playing very well. Magnus got his spot back for the last three matches of the season. He played 17 games in his first season with Coventry City.

For the 1998-99 season, Magnus became the number one goalkeeper. Ogrizovic, who was 41, played only two games. Magnus played 42 games in all competitions that season. He remained the top goalkeeper in Ogrizovic's last season, 1999-2000. In the next season, a younger player named Chris Kirkland took his place. However, Coventry City was moved down from the Premier League that year. Magnus got his spot back after Kirkland moved to Liverpool in the 2001–02 season. His time at Coventry ended in a difficult way during that season.

Time with Celtic and Ancona

In the summer of 2002, Magnus Hedman moved to Celtic in the Scottish Premier League. He played 36 games for Celtic over three years. However, he had some injuries. This meant he could not always be the main goalkeeper. Rab Douglas and later David Marshall were often chosen by the manager, Martin O'Neill.

In January 2004, he went on a loan to an Italian team called Ancona. This team played in Serie A. Magnus only played three games for Ancona. He later said that he saw some things that made him uncomfortable during his time there. He returned to Celtic and played in the Champions League against Barcelona and A.C. Milan. Celtic let him go in July 2005. He decided to stop playing professional football a month later.

Brief Return to England

On 9 November 2006, it was announced that Magnus Hedman would join Chelsea. Chelsea was the Premier League champion at the time. They needed more goalkeepers because some of theirs were injured. Magnus joined Chelsea on 14 November 2006. He wore the number 22 shirt. He did not play any official games for the club. At the end of the season, Chelsea released him from his contract.

Playing for Frej

Magnus later became the goalkeeping coach for Frej. This club was in the third-tier league in Sweden. On 21 June 2013, he made a one-match comeback. He played for 90 minutes in Frej's 3–1 win against Selånger.

Magnus Hedman's International Career

Magnus Hedman was chosen to be a backup goalkeeper for Sweden at the 1994 World Cup. The main goalkeeper was Thomas Ravelli. Magnus made his first appearance for the Sweden national team in February 1997. He was part of the Sweden squad for the Euro 2000. He played in all of Sweden's matches in that tournament. Sweden lost 2–1 to Belgium and 2–1 to Italy. They had a 0–0 draw against Turkey.

In 2000, he won the Guldbollen award, which recognizes the best Swedish footballer. He also played all games for Sweden at the 2002 World Cup. He was chosen to represent Sweden at the Euro 2004. For this tournament, he was a backup goalkeeper for Andreas Isaksson.
