Magnus Hedman's Club Career
Starting His Football Journey
Magnus Hedman was born in Botkyrka, Sweden. He began his football journey with youth clubs like Vårby Gårds IF and IFK Stockholm. In 1987, he joined AIK. He made his first appearance in the Allsvenskan league in 1990. He was only 17 years old at the time. With AIK, he helped the team win the 1992 Allsvenskan championship. In July 1997, he moved to England to play for Coventry City.
Playing for Coventry City
Magnus Hedman was 24 when he first played for Coventry City. His debut was on December 13, 1997, in a 4-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur. He played 17 games in his first season with Coventry City. For the 1998-99 season, he became the main goalkeeper. He played 42 matches that season.
He continued as the number one goalkeeper during the 1999-2000 season. In the next season, a younger player, Chris Kirkland, took his spot. Unfortunately, Coventry City was moved down from the Premier League that year. Magnus got his place back after Kirkland moved to Liverpool. His time at Coventry ended in April 2002.
Time at Celtic and Loan to Ancona
In the summer of 2002, Hedman moved to Celtic in the Scottish Premier League. He played 36 games for Celtic over three years. However, he faced some injuries. This meant he couldn't always be the main goalkeeper. Other goalkeepers like Rab Douglas and David Marshall often played instead.
In January 2004, he went on a short loan to an Italian team called Ancona. He played only three games for Ancona. After his loan, he returned to Celtic. He even played against famous teams like Barcelona and A.C. Milan in the Champions League. Celtic released him in July 2005, and he retired from professional football a month later.
Coming Back to England with Chelsea
On November 9, 2006, it was announced that Magnus Hedman would join Chelsea. Chelsea was the Premier League champion at that time. They needed more goalkeepers due to injuries. He officially joined Chelsea on November 14, 2006. He wore the number 22 shirt. However, he did not play any official matches for the club. Chelsea released him from his contract at the end of the season.
Playing for IK Frej
Later, Magnus Hedman became a goalkeeping coach for Frej. This club was in Sweden's third-tier league. On June 21, 2013, he made a one-match comeback. He played for 90 minutes in Frej's 3–1 win against Selånger.
International Career for Sweden
Magnus Hedman was part of the Sweden squad for the 1994 World Cup. He was a backup goalkeeper to Thomas Ravelli. He made his first appearance for the Sweden national team in February 1997.
He was chosen for the Sweden squad at the Euro 2000. He played in all of Sweden's matches during that tournament. In 2000, he won the Guldbollen award, which recognized him as the best Swedish footballer. He also played full-time for Sweden at the 2002 World Cup. He was selected for Euro 2004 as well.
