Andreas Isaksson's Club Journey
Early Football Years
Andreas Isaksson was born in Smygehamn, Sweden. He started his senior football career with Trelleborgs FF. He played there for two seasons, from 1998 to 1999. He was seen as a very promising young goalkeeper. Because of this, the Italian club Juventus bought him in 1999. However, he never played a main team game for Juventus. This was because they had a famous Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, in their team.
In 2001, Isaksson moved back to Sweden. He joined Stockholm-based Djurgården. He wanted to play regularly for a first team. In his first two full seasons, Djurgården won two Allsvenskan titles in a row. They also won the Svenska Cupen in 2002. Andreas was named the Swedish Goalkeeper of the Year for four years in a row. This was from 2002 to 2005.
In 2004, a French club called Rennes signed him. He took the place of another famous goalkeeper, Petr Čech. Andreas became their main goalkeeper.
Time at Manchester City
After the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Isaksson moved to Manchester City. This was a club in the Premier League in England. He was expected to be their main goalkeeper. However, he had some injuries to his knee and ankle. Also, another goalkeeper, Nicky Weaver, was playing very well. So, Andreas did not play as often as expected.
He played his first game for Manchester City on 9 December 2006. He came on at half-time because Weaver was injured. This game was a "Manchester derby" against Manchester United. City lost the game 3–1. After his second start, he played all the last ten games of the 2006–07 season. He managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in four of those games. In the last game of the season, he saved a penalty kick. Even so, City lost that game 2–1.
Isaksson played many games in the next pre-season. But then he broke his thumb during training. This meant he could not play for the first two months of the 2007–08 season. He then got another knee injury. His first game back was on 31 October 2007. He helped Manchester City win 1–0 against Bolton Wanderers. This win put them into the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
For a short time, he played five league games in a row. The manager, Sven-Göran Eriksson, was trying to decide his best goalkeeper. But Andreas got injured again. While he was out, a young English goalkeeper named Joe Hart took his place. Joe Hart played very well. He kept his spot even when Isaksson was healthy again. Andreas was then mostly on the bench.
Manchester City said they would let Isaksson leave at the end of the season. His last game was a very tough 8–1 loss to Middlesbrough. The score would have been even worse if Andreas had not made many great saves.
Moving to PSV

Isaksson then signed with PSV, who were champions of the Netherlands. This meant he could play in the UEFA Champions League. He took over the number 1 shirt from Heurelho Gomes. Gomes had moved to Tottenham. Andreas played 124 league games for PSV. He left the club in 2012 when his contract ended.
Playing in Turkey for Kasımpaşa
On 9 July 2012, it was announced that Isaksson had left PSV. He joined a Turkish team called Kasımpaşa. They had just been promoted to the top league. He joined them for free. Andreas signed a three-year deal with Kasımpaşa. He was their sixth new player that summer.
Back to Djurgårdens
On 11 August 2016, Isaksson signed a new contract with Djurgården. He was returning to Sweden and the club after 12 years. On 24 August, he played his first game back for Djurgårdens. It was a Swedish Cup game, and they won 5–1. He let in one goal from a penalty kick right at the end. On 7 August 2017, Andreas played his 100th game in the Allsvenskan for Djurgårdens. On 10 May 2018, he played in the Swedish Cup Final. His team beat Malmö 3–0.
Playing for Sweden
When he was playing for Djurgården, Isaksson became the second-choice goalkeeper for the Swedish national team. The main goalkeeper was Magnus Hedman. Andreas played his first international game against Switzerland in March 2002.
Hedman got injured, which gave Isaksson a chance to play more often for Sweden. He played in almost all of Sweden's qualifying games for UEFA Euro 2004. He also played in all of Sweden's games during the tournament itself.
Isaksson stayed the main goalkeeper for his country after Euro 2004. He played three games in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. An injury stopped him from playing more games. By July 2006, he had played 42 games for Sweden.
Andreas was chosen for Sweden's Euro 2008 team. He played in all three of Sweden's group games. He stopped Greece from scoring in Sweden's first match, which they won 2–0. But Sweden could not get past the group stage.
Isaksson was also the main goalkeeper during Sweden's qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup. They did not qualify for that tournament. He also played in the qualifying rounds for Euro 2012. On 29 May 2012, the national team manager announced the final team for the Euros. Isaksson, who had a lot of experience, was included. He played in all three group games again. Sweden did not get out of the group, but he did keep a clean sheet in their 2–0 win over France in the last match.
On 12 October 2012, Isaksson played his 100th international game. This was a World Cup qualifying match against the Faroe Islands. Sweden won the game 2–1.
After Sweden's performance at Euro 2016, Isaksson said he would stop playing for the national team. Sweden again did not get out of the group. He played 133 games for his country in total. This makes him one of Sweden's top three most capped players ever.
Coaching Career
In 2019, Isaksson became a goalkeeping coach for Fagersta Södra. He worked there until the end of 2020. In April 2022, he became the goalkeeping coach for Djurgårdens women's team. He left the club after the 2022 season.
