Club Career Highlights

Starting His Journey

Andreas Isaksson was born in Smygehamn, Sweden. He began his senior football career with Trelleborgs FF. He played there for two seasons, from 1998 to 1999. People saw him as a very promising young goalkeeper.

In July 1999, he moved to the Italian club Juventus. However, a famous Dutch goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, was already there. So, Isaksson did not play any official games for Juventus.

Success with Djurgården

In January 2001, Isaksson decided to join Djurgården in Stockholm. He wanted to play more first-team games. In his first two full seasons, in 2002 and 2003, Djurgården won the Allsvenskan league title twice in a row. They also won the Svenska Cupen (Swedish Cup) in 2002. Isaksson was named the Swedish Goalkeeper of the Year four times in a row, from 2002 to 2005.

In July 2004, a French club called Rennes signed him. He became their main goalkeeper, taking the place of Petr Čech.

Time at Manchester City

After the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Isaksson moved to Manchester City in England. He joined the Premier League club on August 15, 2006. He was expected to be the main goalkeeper. However, he had knee and ankle injuries. Also, another goalkeeper, Nicky Weaver, was playing very well.

Isaksson played his first game for City on December 9, 2006. He came on at half-time because Weaver was injured. City lost that game to Manchester United. After his second start, he played in all the remaining ten games of the 2006–07 season. He managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in four games. In one game, he even saved a penalty kick.

In the next season, 2007–08, Isaksson broke his thumb during training. This meant he could not play for the first two months. He then got a knee injury. When he returned, another young goalkeeper, Joe Hart, was playing very well. Joe Hart kept his place as the main goalkeeper.

Manchester City later said they would let Isaksson leave. His last game for the club was a big 8–1 loss to Middlesbrough. He made many good saves in that game, which stopped the score from being even worse.

Playing for PSV

Isaksson then joined PSV, a top club in the Netherlands. This allowed him to play in the UEFA Champions League. He became their number one goalkeeper. Isaksson played 124 league games for PSV. He left the club in the summer of 2012 when his contract ended.

Moving to Kasımpaşa

On July 9, 2012, Isaksson joined Kasımpaşa in Turkey. This team had just been promoted to the top league. He signed a three-year contract with them. He was their sixth new player that summer.

Back to Djurgården

On August 11, 2016, Isaksson signed a new contract with Djurgården. He returned to his old club after 12 years away from Sweden. On August 24, he played his first game back. It was a Swedish Cup qualifier, which Djurgården won 5–1. On August 7, 2017, Isaksson played his 100th league match for Djurgården. On May 10, 2018, he played in the Swedish Cup Final. His team beat Malmö 3–0 to win the cup.

International Career

While playing for Djurgården, Isaksson became the second-choice goalkeeper for the Swedish national team. He played his first international game against Switzerland in March 2002.

The main goalkeeper, Magnus Hedman, got injured. This gave Isaksson the chance to play regularly for Sweden. He played in almost all of Sweden's qualifying games for UEFA Euro 2004. He also played in all of Sweden's matches during that tournament.

Isaksson remained the first-choice goalkeeper for Sweden after Euro 2004. He played three games in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. An injury stopped him from playing more games. By July 2006, he had played 42 games for his country.

Isaksson was chosen for Sweden's Euro 2008 team. He played in all three of Sweden's group games. He kept a "clean sheet" (meaning the other team didn't score) in Sweden's first match against Greece. Sweden won 2–0, but they did not make it to the quarter-finals.

Isaksson was also the main goalkeeper during Sweden's qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup. He also played in the qualifying rounds for Euro 2012. On May 29, 2012, the national team manager announced the final team for the Euros, and Isaksson was included. He played in all three group games again. Sweden did not get out of the group, but he did keep a clean sheet in their 2–0 win over France.

On October 12, 2012, Isaksson played his 100th international game. This was during a World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands, which Sweden won 2–1.

After Sweden's performance at Euro 2016, Isaksson announced he would stop playing for the national team. He played 133 games for Sweden in total. This makes him the third most capped player for his country.

Coaching Career

In 2019, Isaksson became a goalkeeping coach for Fagersta Södra. He worked there until the end of 2020. In April 2022, he was named the goalkeeping coach for Djurgården's women's team. He left the club after the 2022 season.
