Mai Yamani (Arabic: مي يماني) was born on September 6, 1956. She is a Saudi scholar and writer. She is also an anthropologist, which means she studies human societies and cultures.
Mai Yamani's Early Life
Mai Yamani was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1956. Her mother was from Mosul, Iraq. Her father, Ahmed Zaki Yamani, was from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He was a former Saudi Minister. The family name "Yamani" means "from Yemen." This is because her grandfathers came from Yemen.
Mai Yamani went to school in different places. She studied in Baghdad, Iraq, and in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. For high school, she attended Château Mont-Choisi in Lausanne, Switzerland. She was there from 1967 to 1975.
After high school, she went to Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, USA. She earned her bachelor's degree with the highest honors. Later, she studied at Somerville College, Oxford at the University of Oxford in England. She was the first Yemeni woman to earn two advanced degrees from Oxford. She received a Master of Studies (M.St.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) in social anthropology.
Mai Yamani's Career
Mai Yamani began her career as a university teacher. She taught at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 1981 to 1984. She then worked as a research fellow at the University of Oxford from 1990 to 1991. She was also an academic advisor for Georgetown University from 1990 to 2000. From 1992 to 2000, she was a research fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London.
She has worked with important international research groups called think tanks. These groups study big ideas and advise governments. She was a research fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs in London from 1997 to 2007. She was also a policy fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., from 2007 to 2008. From 2008 to 2009, she was a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.
More recently, Mai Yamani was a visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She worked there from 2015 to 2017. She was also a visiting professor at Mosul University from 2017 to 2020.
Mai Yamani is very good with languages. She speaks Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and Italian fluently. She can also understand and use Persian, Hebrew, and Maltese.
