Mai Yamani (Arabic: مي يماني; born September 6, 1956) is a Saudi scholar, author, and anthropologist. She is known for her research and writings about the Middle East.
Mai Yamani's Early Life and Education
Mai Yamani was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1956. Her mother was from Mosul, Iraq. Her father was from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Her father, Ahmed Zaki Yamani, was a Saudi Minister. The family name "Yamani" means "from Yemen." This is because her grandfathers came from Yemen.
Mai went to school in Baghdad, Iraq, and Mecca, Saudi Arabia. From 1967 to 1975, she attended a special secondary school. It was called Château Mont-Choisi in Lausanne, Switzerland.
She then went to Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She earned her first degree there with the highest honors. This is called summa cum laude. After that, she studied at Somerville College, Oxford at the University of Oxford. She was the first woman from Yemen to get two advanced degrees from Oxford. These were a Master of Studies (M.St.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.). Her studies focused on social anthropology.
Mai Yamani's Career Journey
Mai Yamani began her career as a university teacher. She taught at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This was between 1981 and 1984. She also worked as a research fellow at the University of Oxford from 1990 to 1991.
She was an academic advisor for Georgetown University from 1990 to 2000. She also worked as a research fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). This is part of the University of London.
Mai Yamani has worked at important international research centers. These centers are sometimes called think tanks. They are located in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. She was a research fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs in London. This was from 1997 to 2007.
She was also a policy fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. This was from 2007 to 2008. From 2008 to 2009, she was a visiting scholar at Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.
More recently, Mai Yamani was a visiting senior fellow. She worked at the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science. This was between 2015 and 2017. She was also a visiting professor at Mosul University. This role lasted from 2017 to 2020.
Mai Yamani speaks many languages very well. She is fluent in Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and Italian. She also knows enough Persian, Hebrew, and Maltese to work with them.
