Maianbar is a small, quiet village located on the edge of southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It's about 29 kilometres south of the main city centre of Sydney. This village is part of the Sutherland Shire area.

Maianbar is very close to another village called Bundeena, less than a kilometre away. You can even walk between them using a bush track and a footbridge! Maianbar sits on the southern side of Port Hacking, a beautiful waterway. Across the water, you can see suburbs like Burraneer and Cronulla. What makes Maianbar special is that it's completely surrounded by the amazing Royal National Park.

What's in a Name?

The name Maianbar comes from the Gamilaraay language, an Aboriginal language. It means deep tank or waterhole. This name was first used for places where fish were raised. The people in charge of the Royal National Park likely chose it.

Before 1951, parts of the village were known by other names, like Fishermans Bay Estate and Sand Spit Estate. But then, the Sutherland Shire Council officially named the whole area Maianbar.

Who Lives Here?

According to the 2016 Census, there were 505 people living in Maianbar. Most people, about 83%, were born in Australia. Also, almost everyone, about 93.4%, spoke only English at home.

Local Shops and Community

Maianbar has a single shop where you can buy a few different things. It also has a small community hall, which is a place for local events. There's a station for the Rural Fire Brigade, which helps keep the area safe from fires. Plus, there's a local park where people can relax and play.

Getting Around Maianbar

Maianbar is a bit isolated, meaning it's not super easy to get to, but you can reach it by road. It's about a twenty-five-minute drive from Sutherland. You can also get there by ferry! There's a ferry service that runs every hour from Cronulla to Bundeena.

A creek called Cabbage Tree Creek and an area known as 'The Basin' separate Bundeena from Maianbar. You can walk between the two villages using a bush track and a footbridge, which takes about 30 minutes. There's also a road that connects Bundeena and Maianbar, which is about 9 kilometres long.

The Maianbar Bundeena Bus Service runs a local bus route (989) between Maianbar and Bundeena. This bus runs only on school days. On Wednesdays, there's one bus trip to Engadine and back. On Fridays, there's one bus trip to Miranda and back. Both of these trips start from Bundeena and go through Maianbar.

The Art Trail

Both Bundeena and Maianbar are home to many talented artists. These artists open their homes once a month for a special event called the Art Trail. It's like a walking tour where you can see and buy their artwork! The Art Trail happens on the first Sunday of every month. It's free to visit and a great way for local artists to share their creations. You can find more information on the Art Trail Website.

Local Wildlife and Nature

Many years ago, during early colonial times, Indonesian rusa deer were brought to this area. Since then, their population has grown quite large. Some residents see these deer as a problem, and the National Parks & Wildlife Service sometimes manages their numbers. However, many other residents really enjoy seeing the deer. This difference of opinion can sometimes cause strong feelings in the villages.
