History of Burraneer

The name Burraneer Bay was first written down by a surveyor named Robert Dixon in 1827. He spelled it Burranear Bay. Dixon often chose Aboriginal names for the bays in this area. People generally believe the name means point of the bay.

In 1858, Mary and Andrew Webster bought land here for 108 pounds and 15 shillings. They later sold their land to Dominick Dolan in 1863. Another person, James Wilson, bought a large piece of land, about 252 acres (1.02 square kilometres), in 1862. He sold his land in 1866 to Thomas Holt. Holt was a very rich man who owned a huge estate of about 12,000 acres (49 square kilometres). This estate stretched all the way from Sutherland to Cronulla.
