A Look Back at Mainville's Past
Mainville has a history that goes back a long time. In 1814, a gristmill was built in the area. A gristmill is a place where grains like wheat are ground into flour.
Later, in the 1850s, the Catawissa, Williamsport and Erie Railroad was built through Mainville. This railroad later became part of the Reading Railroad. Another railroad, the Danville, Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre Railroad, also came through Mainville in the early 1870s. This one was later bought by the Pennsylvania Railroad. These railroads helped connect Mainville to other places and transport goods.
The first churches in Mainville were built in 1813 and 1832, showing that people were settling and building a community there early on.
Mainville's Location and Surroundings
Mainville is located in the southern part of Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It covers a total area of about 1.83 square kilometers (0.71 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a very small amount of water.
The community is bordered by Catawissa Creek to the west. This creek flows through a "water gap," which is a place where a river cuts through a mountain ridge. Here, it flows between Catawissa Mountain and Nescopeck Mountain.
Pennsylvania Route 339 is a main road that goes through Mainville. This road can take you about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast to Mifflinville and Interstate 80, a major highway. If you go south on Route 339, you can travel about 21 miles (34 kilometers) up the Catawissa Creek valley and over Locust Mountain to Mahanoy City.
Bloomsburg, which is the main town for Columbia County, is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northwest of Mainville. You can get there by taking Mainville Road.
