Majagua is a town and a special area called a municipality in Cuba. It's located in the Ciego de Ávila Province. A big highway called the Carretera Central runs right through it.

Where is Majagua Located?

Majagua is in the southwest part of the Ciego de Ávila province. It shares borders with other towns and areas:

• North: Florencia and Ciro Redondo
• South: La Sierpe
• East: Ciego de Ávila and Venezuela
• West: Jatibonico

Because Majagua is located to the west of the Trocha (a historical defensive line), it has a unique culture. Many islanders settled here long ago. They grew fruits, tobacco, and raised animals. This gives Majagua a different feel compared to the eastern part of the province.

How Big is Majagua?

The area of Majagua is about 541.5 square kilometers. It has a long, narrow shape. The main town of Majagua is part of this area. The municipality also includes smaller villages like Guayacanes, Jicotea, Las Coloradas, and La Calera.

To give you an idea of its size, Majagua is larger than five countries in Continental Europe. These countries are Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City.

Majagua's Climate and Landscape

Majagua has a tropical climate, like a savanna. This means it has wet and dry seasons. In winter, cold air from the Arctic can affect the weather. During summer, tropical storms and cyclones can bring changes.

Weather Patterns

The sun shines a lot in Majagua, about 2700 to 2900 hours each year. March and April are usually the sunniest months.

The average temperature is between 25°C and 26°C (77°F and 79°F). July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures around 28°C (82°F). From November to May, temperatures drop below 25°C (77°F) because of cold air from the north.

Cold fronts are common in Majagua. From 1916 to 1989, 1080 cold fronts arrived in the municipality. This was 73% of all cold fronts that reached Cuba!

Rainfall in Majagua

Rainfall varies across Majagua. The northern part gets more rain, between 1400 and 1600 millimeters per year. The southern part gets less, about 1200-1400 millimeters. This is because the northern area is in a "convective belt" where warm air rises and forms rain clouds.

Near the main town, the average rainfall is 135 millimeters. June is the wettest month (249mm), and December is the driest (17mm). Summer rains often come as thunderstorms. Winter rains are usually from cold fronts.

The air in Majagua is quite humid. In the morning, the average humidity is 95%. By the afternoon, it drops to about 60%.

Majagua's Ancient History

It's hard to imagine, but Majagua looked very different millions of years ago. The land where Majagua now stands was once covered by the sea. This happened more than 42 million years ago! Over time, the land rose out of the water, then sank again, and finally rose for good.

The land in Majagua is mostly flat. In the north, near the Cordillera Las Villas mountains, it's higher and wavier, reaching 180 meters (590 feet) above sea level. The town of Majagua itself is about 100 meters (328 feet) high. In the very south, it's only 5 meters (16 feet) above sea level.

In 2022, Majagua had a population of 24,987 people. The area is about 544 square kilometers (210 square miles). This means there are about 46 people living in each square kilometer (119 people per square mile).

The people of Majagua work in farming, raising animals, and industry. Some important industries include:

• Making canned fruits and vegetables.
• Producing textiles (like fabrics).
• Drilling for oil.

The town has important services like water, sewers, telephones, and electricity. It also has bus and train stations. There's even a company that fixes household items like refrigerators.

• Primary Schools: There are two primary schools, Sergio Pérez Castillo and 5 de septiembre. They can teach up to 900 students. Many students stay for semi-boarding, meaning they have meals and activities at school. Both schools have sports areas, libraries, computer labs, and even gardens.
• Kindergarten Circles: Two kindergartens, Amanecer de América and Bebé, care for up to 290 young children.

Schools for Older Students

• Vocational School: The Movimiento Juvenil school teaches students practical skills. It can hold 175 students and has sports areas, a library, a garden, and a computer lab.
• Polytechnic School: This school offers vocational high school education. Since 2010-2011, it has also offered pre-university studies.
• ESBU: Simón Reyes Hernández is a school for 500 students. It has a sports area, library, computer lab, and a small garden.
• Pioneers' School: This special school offers short courses for primary and secondary students. They can learn about interesting topics like nursing, veterinary care, cooking, and food.
