Makalu is an amazing mountain and the fifth tallest in the world! It stands incredibly high at 8,485 metres (27,838 ft) above sea level. Imagine a giant, four-sided pyramid reaching for the sky – that's what Makalu looks like. This mighty peak is located right on the border between two countries: Nepal and China. It's part of the huge Himalayas mountain range.

Discovering Makalu

Makalu is one of the fourteen mountains on Earth that are taller than 8,000 meters (about 26,247 feet). These are called "eight-thousanders." Makalu is known for its unique shape, which makes it stand out from other mountains. Its four sharp ridges and steep sides make it a very challenging climb for even the most experienced mountaineers.

Where is Makalu Located?

Makalu is found in the Mahalangur Himalaya range. This range is home to some of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest. Makalu is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Mount Everest. The border between Nepal and China runs right over its summit. This means the mountain is shared by both countries.

First Climbs and Challenges

Climbing Makalu is very difficult. It has steep slopes and sharp ridges. The weather can also be very harsh. Many climbers have tried to reach its top.

The first successful climb happened on May 15, 1955. A French team, led by Jean Franco, made it to the summit. Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy were the first two climbers to stand on top. They used a route on the north face and northeast ridge. This was a huge achievement in mountaineering.

Why is Makalu So Hard to Climb?

Makalu is considered one of the toughest eight-thousanders to climb. Here are some reasons why:

Steep Slopes: The mountain has very steep sections, especially near the top.
Sharp Ridges: Its pyramid shape means it has narrow, exposed ridges.
Harsh Weather: Strong winds and very cold temperatures are common.

At the foot of Makalu lies the Makalu-Barun Valley. This valley is a remote and wild place. It has deep gorges, high waterfalls, and thick forests. Glaciers from Makalu feed the rivers in this valley. It is a special place for nature lovers.

Wildlife and Plants

The Makalu-Barun National Park is home to many different kinds of wildlife. You might find rare animals like the red panda, snow leopard, and musk deer. Many types of birds also live here. The park also has a rich variety of plants, including beautiful rhododendron forests. These forests bloom with colorful flowers in the spring.
