Maksim Viktorovich Surayev (born May 24, 1972) is a Russian politician and a former cosmonaut. He is known for his two long stays on the International Space Station (ISS) and for performing two spacewalks. After his career as a cosmonaut, he became a politician, serving in the State Duma, which is like the Russian parliament.

Early Life and Education

Maksim Surayev was born in Chelyabinsk, a city in Russia. Because his father was in the military, Maksim moved around a lot when he was a child. He lived in different places, including Siberia and towns near Moscow.

Maksim is married to Anna Alexandrovna. They have two daughters named Arina and Ksenia. He enjoys sports and reading in his free time. He is also a trained diver and an instructor for parachute jumping.

Maksim studied at the Kacha Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots, where he became a pilot-engineer in 1994. He then went to the Zhukovski Air Force Academy and graduated in 1997 as a pilot-engineer-researcher. In 2007, he earned a law degree from the Russian Academy of Civil Service.

Maksim Surayev's Cosmonaut Career

Maksim Surayev began his journey to become a cosmonaut in December 1997. He finished his basic space training in November 1999 and was officially qualified as a test-cosmonaut. After that, he continued with advanced training for the International Space Station.

From 2006 to 2009, Maksim was a backup crew member for two different missions to the ISS, Expedition 17 and Expedition 19. This meant he was ready to go into space if another astronaut couldn't.

First Space Mission: Expeditions 21 and 22

Maksim Surayev's first trip to space was for Expedition 21 and Expedition 22 on the International Space Station. He launched aboard the Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft on September 30, 2009, from Kazakhstan. He was the commander of this Soyuz spacecraft.

During his time on the ISS, he worked as a flight engineer. He spent 167 days in space. Maksim and his crewmate, Jeffrey Williams, returned to Earth on March 18, 2010, landing in Kazakhstan. While in space, Maksim kept a blog to share his experiences.

Second Space Mission: Expeditions 40 and 41

Maksim Surayev went back to the International Space Station for Expedition 40 and Expedition 41. He commanded the Soyuz TMA-13M spacecraft, which launched on May 28, 2014. His crewmates were Alexander Gerst and Reid Wiseman.

The Soyuz spacecraft docked with the ISS about six hours after launch. As part of the crew, Maksim helped with scientific experiments. He also saw many different spacecraft arrive at the station, including Russian, American, and European supply ships. Maksim became the commander of Expedition 41 on September 10, 2014, and served in that role until November 10, 2014. The mission returned to Earth on November 10, 2014.

Spacewalks

Maksim Surayev performed two spacewalks during his time in space. A spacewalk is when an astronaut goes outside the spacecraft into the vacuum of space.

First Spacewalk: January 2010

On January 14, 2010, Maksim went on his first spacewalk with fellow Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov. They wore special Russian Orlan-MK spacesuits. The spacewalk lasted 5 hours and 44 minutes.

During this spacewalk, they connected cables between different parts of the ISS, like the Poisk and Zvezda modules. They also installed antennas and handrails. They even collected a science experiment from the outside of the station and threw out some space trash.

Second Spacewalk: October 2014

Maksim Surayev's second spacewalk was on October 22, 2014, with cosmonaut Aleksandr Samokutyayev. This spacewalk was planned for six hours, but they finished all their tasks in just 3 hours and 38 minutes!

They removed some science equipment and antennas from the Poisk module. One piece of equipment was used to study earthquakes. Maksim threw this equipment away on a safe path away from the station. They also opened a cover on an experiment from the European Space Agency that studies how samples react to the space environment. After finishing their work, they took pictures of the space station's surface to check its condition.

Political Career

In 2016, Maksim Surayev retired from being a cosmonaut. He was then elected to the State Duma, which is a part of the Russian government. He was a member of the United Russia party. He served in the State Duma from 2016 to 2021.
