The railroad reached Malcom from Iowa City in 1863. The town was then officially planned out near the Little Bear Creek. Malcom became an incorporated city on April 23, 1872. Later, in 1923–24, a new part was added to the school. At that time, there were also nine small, one-room schools in the surrounding area.
The last class to graduate from Malcom High School was in 1960. After that, the school joined with schools from Brooklyn and Guernsey. They formed the BGM Community School District. The Malcom school building then became an elementary school for younger students.
