Mallik Island, also known as Mallikjuaq Island, is a cool island in Canada's Arctic. Its name means "big wave." This island is not home to any people.

You can find Mallik Island in the Hudson Strait. It sits between Baffin Island's Foxe Peninsula and Dorset Island. Mallik Island and Dorset Island are connected by sand and rocks. A small Inuit town called Cape Dorset is only about 4.5 kilometers away.

Island Landscape: What Mallik Island Looks Like

Mallik Island has some high points, especially in its western part. The tallest spot is about 274 meters (900 feet) above the sea.

Besides small mountains, you can find beautiful waterfalls and clear lakes here.

Wildlife on Mallik Island: Animals You Might See

Many interesting animals visit or live around Mallik Island. You might spot beluga whales swimming in the water. On land, caribou often roam around.

Look up to see peregrine falcons and snowy owls flying. On the ice, polar bears and seals are common.

The island's land is made up of rounded hills and low valleys. This area is called tundra. Here, you can find many different kinds of tundra wildflowers.

Mallikjuaq Territorial Park: A Place of History

Mallikjuaq Territorial Park covers both Mallik Island and Dorset Island. This park is very special because it has many old archaeological sites. These sites show where the Thule people, Dorset culture, and Inuit people lived. Some of these sites are as old as 3,000 years!

If you are in Cape Dorset, you can hike to Mallikjuaq Park. At low tide, the walk takes about 45 minutes. You can also get to the park by boat.
