Marie-Luise "Malu" Dreyer (born 6 February 1961) is a German politician. She was the 8th Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate from 2013 to 2024. She is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Malu Dreyer was the first woman to hold the office of Minister-President in Rhineland-Palatinate. She also served as the President of the Federal Council for one year, from November 2016 to October 2017. This role made her the deputy to the President of Germany during that time. She announced her resignation from the Minister-President office on June 19, 2024, and her term ended on July 10, 2024.

Early Life and Education
Malu Dreyer was born in 1961. She was the second of three children. Her parents were both teachers. In 1977, she spent a year as an exchange student in California, USA.
After finishing high school in 1980, Malu Dreyer started studying English and theology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The next year, she changed her studies to law. She finished her law degrees in 1987 and 1990 with excellent results.
Political Career
From 1989, Malu Dreyer worked at the University of Mainz as a research assistant. In 1991, she became a judge and later a prosecutor in Bad Kreuznach.
Joining the SPD in 1995
Malu Dreyer joined the SPD in 1995. From 1995 to 1997, she was the mayor of Bad Kreuznach. In 1997, she became a department head in Mainz, focusing on social affairs, youth, and housing.
Since 2002, she served as the State Minister for Social Affairs, Labor, Health, and Demography. In 2012, she was chosen to take over from the Minister-President, Kurt Beck. She was officially elected as Minister-President on January 16, 2013.
Role in the Bundesrat
As Minister-President, Malu Dreyer was one of Rhineland-Palatinate's representatives in the Bundesrat. The Bundesrat is like a second parliament in Germany, where states can influence national laws. She worked on committees dealing with foreign affairs and European Union matters.
State Elections and Leadership
In the 2016 state elections, Malu Dreyer was very popular. She led her party, the SPD, to win with 36.2% of the votes. This meant the SPD stayed in power in Rhineland-Palatinate for their sixth time in a row.
During her time as Minister-President, her government decided to sell the state's share in the Frankfurt–Hahn Airport. This airport was losing money.
In 2017, Malu Dreyer was elected as a vice chair of the SPD's national leadership. She also helped lead discussions to form a new government after the 2017 national elections. In 2022, her party nominated her to be a delegate for choosing the President of Germany.

Honours
In 2023, Malu Dreyer received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. This is a very high honor in Germany.
Personal Life
Since 2004, Malu Dreyer has been married to Klaus Jensen. He is also a politician from the SPD and was a former mayor of Trier.
In 1994, Malu Dreyer was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. This is a condition that affects movement. She shared this information publicly in 2006. When she travels longer distances, she uses her wheelchair, which she calls her "Rolli."
