Early Life and Challenges
Cacsmy Brutus was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on November 20, 1989. She spent her childhood growing up in Haiti. When she was 14 years old, doctors found that she had a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma and also lung cancer. At that time, doctors believed she only had three weeks to live.
Two years later, she had an operation to replace her hip. Unfortunately, this operation did not work as planned. Because of this, her right leg had to be removed. Mama Cax later shared that it took her several years to feel confident again. For a while, she even hid her prosthetic leg.
Despite these challenges, she continued her education. She earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in International Relations. When she was 18, Mama Cax also learned how to play wheelchair basketball.
Becoming a Model
On September 15, 2016, Mama Cax received a special invitation. She was asked to go to the White House to take part in a fashion show. This event was organized by Barack and Michelle Obama. At that time, she was working in the office of the Mayor of New York City while finishing her studies.
In 2017, Mama Cax appeared in her very first commercial advertisement. Soon after, she signed with a well-known modeling agency called JAG Models in New York. She quickly became a popular figure in the fashion world.
Fashion Show Appearances
Mama Cax walked the runway in shows for famous brands like Chromat and Rihanna's Fenty Beauty. She also appeared in advertising campaigns for big names such as Tommy Hilfiger and Sephora.
In 2018, she made a big impact at New York Fashion Week. She walked the runway wearing a swimsuit designed by Becca McCharen. McCharen is a designer who wants to change traditional ideas of beauty. That same year, Mama Cax was featured on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine. She shared the cover with other inspiring models, Jillian Mercado and Chelsea Werner.
In 2019, Mama Cax became the face of the Olay brand. She helped them with their marketing campaign for sunscreen. In October 2019, Mama Cax announced another exciting plan. She shared that she would be participating in the New York City Marathon in a wheelchair.
Her Passing
In December 2019, while she was in England, Mama Cax became very ill. She was taken to Royal London Hospital. She was suffering from severe stomach pains and had blood clots in her lungs. Sadly, Mama Cax passed away in the hospital on December 16, 2019.
