Mamey is a small area, or barrio, located in the municipality of Juncos in Puerto Rico. Think of a barrio like a neighborhood or district within a larger town. In 2010, about 4,310 people lived in Mamey. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
History of Mamey
The history of Mamey is connected to the larger story of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898, a peace agreement that ended the war. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory belonging to the U.S. but not fully part of it, like a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government took a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This count showed that Mamey, along with a nearby barrio called Gurabo Abajo, had a combined population of 1,679 people.
