History of Mamey
How Mamey Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a U.S. territory but not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 680 people lived in the Mamey barrio at that time. Over the years, the population of Mamey has grown quite a bit!
