Mannboro is a small, rural community in eastern Amelia County, Virginia. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an "unincorporated community," meaning it's a group of homes and businesses that share a name and location. You can find Mannboro along Route 612 (Richmond Road).

In the past, people spelled the name "Mannborough" or "Mannsborough." The first post office here opened in 1829. Today, the Mannboro post office (ZIP code 23105) serves only the immediate area. Other nearby areas get their mail from the post office in Amelia Court House. This larger post office is about 14 miles (22.5 km) northwest. Mannboro is also home to Amelia County's Volunteer Fire Department Station 2.

A Look at Mannboro's Past

Mannboro has a rich history, playing a small part in major American events.

Revolutionary War Events

In July 1781, during the American Revolutionary War, British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton was sent to destroy supplies that could help the American army. He burned a large food storage building in Mannboro. This happened before he moved on to Amelia Court House.

Mannboro During the Civil War

Mannboro also saw action during the United States Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army passed through Mannboro. This was during their retreat westward in the final days of the war.

There was a clash near Deep Creek, close to Mannboro. This fight was between Confederate troops and Union commander Philip Sheridan's forces. Confederate soldiers were hoping to get much-needed food at the nearby rail depot. Lee finally surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

The Rosenwald School Project

The Mannboro School was built around 1925 or 1926. It was one of many Rosenwald Schools constructed in Amelia County. These schools were part of a special project in the early 20th century. The Rosenwald School project built thousands of schools across the South. These schools were mainly for the education of African American children. The Mannboro School was designed for two teachers and was built on a 2-acre site. Even after schools became desegregated, a campus called Mannboro School continued to operate on Route 612 as late as 1967.

Changes in Roads

In the early 1900s, part of Route 38 went through Mannboro. This section connected Amelia Court House and Sutherland. In 1951, this road was changed. It became what is now known as Route 708.
