Exploring the Districts of Manor Castle Ward
This ward is made up of several interesting districts. Let's take a closer look at some of them.
Discovering Manor: A Historic Area
Manor is a large housing area in eastern Sheffield. It is divided into Manor Park, Upper and Lower Manor, and Manor Top.
Before the 1930s, Manor was mostly countryside. There were only a few houses along the main roads. In the 1930s, new homes were built here. This was part of a plan to help with crowded living in central Sheffield. The idea was to create a 'garden city' feel. However, unlike true garden cities, there were no workplaces built directly into the plan.
Manor gets its name from Sheffield Manor, a historic building nearby. Manor Top is now easy to reach by the Sheffield Supertram. Many parts of the Manor area have been updated or rebuilt since the late 1990s.
Wybourn: A Community from the 1920s
Wybourn is a housing area built in the 1920s. It lies north of Manor Park and east of Park Hill.
In the northwest part of Wybourn is Hyde Park. This area was once similar to Park Hill, with many large blocks of flats. Some of these blocks have since been taken down. Others have been updated with new outer walls and changes to their walkways.
Park Hill: Named After a Deer Park
Park Hill is the name of the district where the famous Park Hill flats are located. The name comes from a deer park that used to be part of Sheffield Manor. A small part of this old deer park is now known as Norfolk Park.
Manor Castle in Popular Culture
The band Reverend and the Makers mentions Manor Top in their song "Heavyweight Champion of the World". The song includes the line, "At school he used to dream about being Bruce Lee/But the need for chops in Manor Top ain't all that great you see".
